One Hundred Billion Stars

Strong, fierce women are the reason I never feel sorry for myself and find hope in every situation. Women like Andrea Gibson, Lhakpa Sherpa, Ida B. Wells, Jacinda Arden, Betty Reid Soskin, my mother, Jo Frances King, and so many more.

When we stand on our small patch of earth and raise our faces to the night sky, we might be able to glimpse some of the hundred billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy. A few years ago, I was in Kenya watching waves of stars exploding across an unpolluted black sky and it was magical. I see each human being as a star in the sky.

The daily smallness of people who want to be trillionaires, sometimes makes me forget that our lives are part of a breathing, vibrant cloud of stardust. We are part of an infinite universe, and our greatest task is to feel humanity’s breath in our heart.

Truly, I had no idea how our country and world would survive 2025, but here we are crossing the finish line to 2026. I feel a promise of light returning as we continue to fight for universal health care, our homes to be safe, and the well-being and progress of thousands of good people.

My second memoir - Loving the Fire: Choosing Me, Finding Freedom will be published in April, and I am excited to send my words into the world. I look forward to meeting many of you on my book tour.
